How can I make my newborn pictures look natural? | Spokane Newborn Photographer
Creating natural looking newborn pictures is partially on the photographer and partially on the client. The two have to work together to really make great art. Here’s my best tips for making your newborn pictures look as natural as possible.
Choose a Lifestyle Photographer. Choose a “Lifestyle” newborn photographer, like me. We specialize in photography that sits comfortably in the middle of portrait photography and documentary photography, meaning you get a little of both and some in between. We know how to set up poses and allow them to unfold in natural ways. We direct you lightly allowing for you to look as much like you as possible, but in a flattering way.
Pictures at home. Opt to have your pictures taken at home for the most natural and realistic look. Many of us are tired of perfectly curated content and art. Studio photography would be those ultra perfect and bright looking newborn photos with a baby in the basket that most of us have turned away from. We want real, because real is beautiful and the best way to achieve that is to have your pictures taken at home with natural light. Don’t get me started on flash photography.
Casual + Cozy Outfits. Choose comfortable and cozy outfits. You’ll want to choose pieces that are cute too. Having a good mix will create a very real and natural look. Dress somewhat like you normally would so that you look like you. Your newborn pictures are not the time to put on a show. These are for your memories, you’ll want to look like you.
Real Connection. Photographers can guide and direct all day, but it’s up to the clients to really lean into their kisses and nuzzle into their new baby. The more you love on and connect with your family, the more real and natural your pictures will look. Also, try not to look at the camera. When you look at the camera, it gives the impression of awareness that you are being watched, where as if you look at your baby or your family, you will look like all of your focus and attention is on them where it should be.
