How to choose the best newborn photographer | Spokane Newborn Photographer
Experience. Look into the amount of experience your photographer has. How long have they been a photographer? How many families do they work with each year? I personally have been a photographer for over a decade and work with hundreds of families each year. Newer photographers may not be able to say that and may secretly struggle with things behind the scenes that you don’t know about. Dig into your photographer and don’t choose them just because it’s who your friend used.
Equipment. What level of equipment is your photographer using? This can directly impact the look of your photos. What level of camera and lenses? Do they use a studio? Do they use flash? Is your photographer buying memory cards on Amazon from sketchy dealers? Are your pictures safe with them? These are important things to know about your photographer and it’s worth a conversation. Everyone starts somewhere and this definitely isn’t to knock anyone, but as the consumer, you deserve to know these details when you’re investing in newborn photography.
Style. What kind of style does your photographer have? Are they a portrait photographer or lifestyle? Are their pictures stiff and heavily posed. These are things to look for in their portfolio. Are they paying for “best of awards” Buyer always beware. Do you like how their work looks? Can you see a full gallery of their images?
Colors. Do you like the colors in their edits? Some photographers edit in very warm “sunny” colors, some photographers edit based on the scene they are photographing. Do you like what your see in every image regardless of if they all look the same or every session is unique? Only you can answer this.
Comfort. Are you comfortable inviting this person into your postpartum space to take your newborn photos. In many cases, women would not invite a male photographer into their postpartum space. Consider if this photographer is mother or father, are they going to be understanding of what postpartum is in real life. Never hire a photographer you are not comfortable with or that you do not trust.
Feel. Do you like how their photography makes you feel? This is almost more important than how the photography “looks”. If you love how the look of the work “feels” and your like the photographer as a person, then you are likely hiring the best photographer for your family.
