What to expect during an in-home newborn session in Spokane
Newborn session in Spokane, Washington
In-home newborn sessions are relatively new. Many families are not sure what to expect when it comes to having newborn photos in their home. The assumption is often that there will be a ton of equipment and props brought into the home, but this simply is not the case. Newborn sessions within your home are a very low-key and relaxed experience. Let’s walk through what to expect from your in-home newborn session.
When I arrive at your home to take your newborn photos, I arrive with very minimal equipment, usually just a small bag containing a camera and a couple of lenses. I may chat with you for a minute and introduce myself to your family. If you have older kiddos, I am quick to seek them out early on to make their acquaintance. Children are often curious and excited when I show up, so I give them some attention while mom and dad get the newborn baby ready.
After a few moments, I take a small tour of your home to check out the natural lighting. I usually prefer to work in the primary bedroom, nursery and sometimes the living room (I provide more information on this when you book with me, no family goes into this unprepared). I select the room with the best lighting, turn off any lights, open curtains and return to my bag to unpack my gear. If necessary, I’ll help the family tidy up the photoshoot space. I never want my families to feel like they need to clean for me with a new baby, so I take on that task to keep things easy and stress-free for the parents.
As I mentioned above, I use very minimal gear for newborn sessions. Usually just a camera and a couple of lenses. I don’t bring any props with me, I believe babies are perfect as they are and look best when photographed in mom and dad’s arms. If completely necessary I do carry a continuous light (rather than flash) in my car. If your home doesn’t have enough light I may bring it in, but that is very. very rare. My light set up is ADA friendly.
When everyone is ready to start, we go to the chosen room and I photograph the entire immediate family together first. Then I photograph the new baby with his or her siblings. This allows the other children to be involved while they’re still excited and curious, then be excused when they lose interest or need a snack- they’re always welcome to rejoin (which they often do). From there I offer a feeding/ diaper changing break for the new baby. Then I proceed to photograph the new baby with mom and dad, then solo.
When we’ve decided that we got all the pictures that we want, I’ll put the space back how I found it and pack up my gear. On average newborn sessions at home take around an hour to an hour and a half to complete. I always offer plenty of time for parents to accommodate the needs of their baby.
That’s it! Nice and simple. Newborn sessions at your home truly are the best way to capture those precious early days with your new baby.
