Winter maternity sessions in Spokane, Wa.
Planning a maternity session during the winter comes with some challenges when it comes to where to take the photos, not know what to expect from the weather and what to wear that looks cute and is warm enough. I’ve been photographer in Spokane, Washington for over a decade, I’ve seen it all, so let me give you some tips on getting great maternity photos even in the cold weather.
Where to take the photos. The beautiful thing about maternity photoshoots is that they can be very flexible. I run mine much like a family session or a couple’s session if you don’t have other children already. Everything is very low-key and easy going. I’ve taken maternity photos in homes and outdoors. During the winter months I love a cozy, intimate maternity session within the couple’s home. There’s no worry about the weather and it really helps to capture the true season of where you lived during your pregnancy.
Weather is unpredictable. While this can be the case, we can almost certainly count on the weather being cold. But, If you’ve got to have that golden hour sun for your maternity photos, it can be done during the winter with some good planning. Talk with your photographer about how to accomplish that and reach out early so that there is plenty of time to wait for the sun to come out if we’re in a dreary week. I recommend opting for an open field for winter maternity, because it gives the best chance at good sunlight during the darker times of the winter. If you are planning your session during the wet months, be prepared for a re-schedule text. As a photographer, we want your photos to be flawless, so we will reschedule if we need to.
What to wear. Choosing an outfit for in-home maternity photos is much easier than outdoor in the winter, because you can choose whatever you want to wear inside. I recommend some kind of cozy legging outfit with a cute chunky sweater and/or bralette. Underwear and a sweater can also make really cute intimate maternity session look- definitely a favorite of mine.
If you’re planning for outdoor, be sure to wear something that you can somewhat bundle up in but still show off your bump. A thick sweater or sweater-dress can be a great option. I’ve also seen cute casual sweaters and pants with boots and a hat. Keep your style easy and personal.
