SPOKANE NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER: STYLING YOUR IN-HOME PHOTO SESSION
Styling indoor sessions comes with a unique set of challenges. Keeping outfits for indoor or at home sessions as simple as possible is the way to go. I like to think of it as you’re getting dressed up to leave the house, but then don’t end up going.
Dress Mom First.
The number one rule in all session styling is to dress mom first. Mom, you will set the level of formality for the whole family. For in-home sessions keep it casual. I love leggings and a sweater. A pair of rolled up jeans and a t-shirt. Maybe a very casual cotton dress. I’ve even seen sweatpants done cute, it’s really up to you! Add a clean and simple piece of jewelry to any outfit to elevate it just a little. Don’t worry about shoes, go barefoot or choose some cute knitted socks that match your outfit. Make sure to style your hair in a cute and casual way. I always recommend hair down for all sessions, it’ hides “false double chins” when you’re looking down at your kiddos. If you are a mom who wears make up be sure to put some on so that you feel confident.
Once mom is dressed, follow the level of casualness with the rest of the family.
SELECT YOUR Colors.
I like mostly neutral colors for in home sessions. Look around your home and take note of what color your walls are. If they are white, then you might want to consider creamier colors for your outfit to add a little contrast. If your walls are tan, then crisp whites might be a better choice. Just be sure you are creating slight contrast so that you family isn’t dressed in colors that blend into the walls and furniture. Whatever tones are in your home and on your outfits will impact the overall tone of the photos. If you have questions about this, talk to your photographer. I know I’m always happy to make color suggestions for outfits, because. I want your photos to be gorgeous.
Be Comfortable.
I think a comfortable casual look works best for in home sessions. Especially considering this is often for newborn sessions, simple is key. Wear cute leggings and a sweater or jeans and a t-shirt. I want everyone to be comfortable and have an easy time putting the look together. Over dressing for in home photos, can look out of place, so just keep it as natural as possible. Think about would be worn by actors in a movie on a cozy Saturday morning, because being in photos really is just like acting.
ADD SOME Accessories.
Keep them simple and limited. I like to be as minimalist as possible when styling in home sessions because there can be a lot of design elements in any given home. Wear sweaters, buy a cute throw blanket, get your husband some slippers, buy a cute swaddle for your baby that matches your home. Keep the accessories natural.
