Is my home too small for a newborn photoshoot? | Spokane Newborn Photographer
I’ve been a lifestyle newborn photographer in Spokane for the last decade and I can say with certainty that there is no such thing as a home being too small for newborn pictures. I’ve worked in apartments, 1800s bungalows, condos, and homes of all shapes and sizes. There is no such things as a home that’s too small.
There’s a few things that play a role in newborn photoshoots turning out well at home.
Experience. The first and most important thing is hiring a photographer with a lot of experience and who really knows how to work a camera. Choosing a photographer who does a lot of volume and who isn’t scared of challenging locations is a must. An experienced photographer can do incredible things in the most unusual places and usually has the skills to make all homes work. If you have concerns, but want pictures done in your home, splurge on a good photographer and discuss your home with them.
Lighting. Your home may be small, but does it have one good window that lets in natural light? If the answer is yes, then you can have newborn pictures taken in your home without flash photography. Flashes can be disruptive to the early postpartum environment, I personally don’t use them for this reason. If your home has one good window, I can make a newborn photoshoot work in your home.
Equipment. In addition to experience and lighting, the right equipment makes a big difference, a bigger difference than the size of your home. A photographer who knows which wide angle lens will capture the room, but not distort and widen subjects and clients is invaluable. A better camera will also make possible low light/ small home situations still possible have photoshoots done in. Ask your photographer if their equipment is suitable for your particular home situation. Your photographer should know their camera and lens like their left hand if they’re going to be working with your newborn baby in your home.
Connection. The last and most important piece is connection. If your family has a strong connection and you let it show during your newborn photoshoot, then your pictures will be fine even in a small home. Connection means getting close and cozy with your family and your newborn baby. The closer you are to each other in a tight space, will disguise and distract from the face that the space is small. No one will notice your home and will be completely focused on your beautiful family.
