How do you put family photos together ON The wall?
So you’ve invested in family photos and now you’re trying to decide how to put them all together on your wall. The project absolutely can feel daunting, because the investment can be high and you want it done right. So here’s what I would advise.
First, you have to decide how many pieces of art you will be printing. If you are only printing one of your photos, choose a group image in which every family member is displayed equally, meaning the whole group either looking at the camera or looking away from the camera. My preference for wall art is to not have the family looking at the camera, this avoids the weird impression that “eyes are following you” around the room. Photos of the entire family looking at the camera are best suited for Christmas cards, generally.
If you are printing more than one piece, I recommend that the group shot is the most prominent and displayed towards the center of your gallery. My next suggestion is that you include a photo of mom and dad together. A photo of each child either solo or with mom and dad. Then a group photo of all of the children without the parents. It can also be fun and refreshing to display an image where the family is in movement and or a detail shot like hands or a baby’s feet. When creating a gallery of images on the wall, you’ll want to use photos all from the same photoshoot, but from a variety of angles and aspects to create both variety and cohesiveness.
If you need help choosing which images to display, ask your photographer. We do this for a living and are experts at selecting the perfect images to put together. We do it daily for our instagram accounts. So please, ask us! We want your work to look as good on your walls as it possibly can.
I have a whole guide on how to display your family photos, you can check that out here. I cover absolutely everything in this guide from how to choose outfit colors to match your home, to what medium to have your photos printed on.
